Your Daily Guide

Good morning, Portland! Tomorrow’s “No Kings” rally is expected to bring thousands of people to downtown. There were 40,000 people at the October protest, so I can’t imagine fewer.

Portland protest takes many forms: There are a couple stories on that today ⬇️

What Portland's Talking About

Tear-Gassing Allowed Again

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has put a temporary hold on the rulings that limited federal agents from using crowd control devices like tear gas outside Portland’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building. [OPB]

Trump Resistance, Portland-Style

A self-described “middle-aged, white guy” from Portland has filed suit against the U.S. Treasury’s plan to issue a commemorative 24-karat gold coin with the president’s image on the front. James M. Rickher, 56, a retired lawyer who worked for the U.S. Postal Service Inspection Service, is arguing that it’s illegal under an 1866 law to put the image of a living person on our currency. Salsa Dancing To Return

Northeast Broadway’s Aztec Willie’s Taqueria closed back in September. Now under new ownership with a new name, Aztec on Broadway plans to continue hosting salsa dancing and other events — as well as serving Mexican cuisine. They’ll be opening on April 11. [KOIN]

  • The end of a dance party: Blow Pony — a dance party for the LGBTQ+ community that started back in 2007— will host its final monthly event tomorrow. One key factor is the economics of hosting the events. [Portland Mercury]

Where Is It?

Speaking of protests, there's a small inscription under the artist’s signature on this mural that reads “Fléctere si néqueo súperos Acheronta movebo.” BikePortland reports: “That’s a quote by Virgil taken from The Aeneid that translates to, ‘If I cannot move heaven, I will raise hell.’”

The mural, created in 2020, is at Southeast Water Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard.

“[It’s at] Water Ave next to a great bubble tea/sushi place,” wrote reader TJ. “The sushi guys are sweeties.”

“The Skeleton glows in the dark,” wrote reader Carol P.

A shoutout to them as well as readers Heidi F., Racheal Sommer, Phil Hochstetler, and Irisa P., who all identified the location.

This week’s scavenger hunt comes from reader Chris H.:

Do you know this mural?

Please click here to submit the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt on Fridays. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly and reveal the answer.

Where is it?

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
