| | | Where To Buy Cheap Groceries | For the last year, Stumptown Savings’ Bryan M. Vance has been tracking where to find the cheap groceries in Portland. His one-person media operation, founded last April, is designed to help us all save some money at the grocery store and understand our local food systems (outside of restaurants). He shared a few of his tips on the podcast earlier this week. [City Cast Portland 🎧] | | Overall: WinCo is cheapest. They can offer low prices, because they don’t advertise or take credit cards. (But you can find Bryan M. Vance on social media for a way around that latter one.) No, Costco isn’t the most budget-friendly. “ Where Costco's gonna save you money is not really in groceries unless you're someone who's like, I want 60 eggs a week, or I'm raising a family of baby cows who just guzzle milk,” says Vance. | | The Grocery Outlet secret: If you go in with a shopping list of staples, this isn’t your best bet. But you can find the random deal (say, Irish butter) that’s cheaper than anywhere else. And the stores are owned by independent operators, so there’s variety at different locations. For example, the Hollywood neighborhood location carries Kalama Sourdough Bakery pizza dough. | | Fred Meyer vs. QFC: Here’s some simple facts: "You are going to pay more for the exact same products if you shop at QFC over Fred Meyer. It's just the way it is. They're the same company, same store products. You're gonna pay significantly more,” says Vance. | | Other grocery stores to consider: | - In Portland: "Market of Choice is actually not as expensive as you may think it is. It’s in the name: They pride themselves on offering you choice," he says.
- In Vancouver, Wash: “Check out Chuck's Fresh Markets,” says Vance. “This is like a premium grocery store that is not that much more expensive than like Safeway or Fred Meyer, but you're getting substantially better produce and substantially better meat and dairy. It is kind of a hidden gem, and I actually wish we had one in Portland proper.”

| What Portland's Talking About |
| | Mayor Asks Nearby Counties To Fund Portland Shelters | Mayor Keith Wilson is asking both Clackamas and Washington counties to help fund the city's shelters at a time when Portland and Multnomah County are facing budget shortfalls. Portland shelters are “key emergency resources” for the adjacent counties, Wilson says. Today, Washington County at least is considering a proposal to send at least $1 million. [Oregonian] | | | Uber Issues | The Portland Trail Blazers, Timbers, the Metro Chamber, and others are publicly lobbying against a proposed City Council policy change that would limit how much Lyft and Uber can take from the cost of each ride. The idea is to raise drivers’ pay, but the arts, sports, and business groups argue it will damage downtown’s economy if rides become less economical or accessible. [Willamette Week] | - Related: Uber has said the company will leave Portland if the policy is passed. [Oregonian]
- Benchmark: In Seattle, the cost of rides rose 40% after that city passed a similar policy, according to the business groups. But Councilor Steve Novick, who championed the policies that allowed Uber to come to Portland, is now supporting this policy change, arguing drivers aren’t able to make minimum wage. | | A New Portland Burger, With a Loyal Following | Bbang, a Korean-influenced burger and fried chicken spot, is becoming well known for one of its most popular dishes: the shrimp burger. “Think rectangular, springy fish ball meets shrimp tempura,” writes the Portland Mercury. It was previously available at the Doyaji, a food truck from the same owners. [Portland Mercury] | - 🦐 Bbang is closed on Tuesdays, but opens tomorrow at 3 p.m.

| 🐣 Two penguin mamas at the Oregon Zoo welcomed youngsters last month. If the photo above isn’t enough penguin cuteness, there’s video — and a chance to see them in person once they begin waddling — in about three months’ time. | | It takes two years for Humboldt penguins to grow into their classic black-and-white coloring, so they’ll sport the "dryer lint" look for a while. The birds are native to Chile and Peru and officially protected as endangered species here in the U.S., owing to the threat of climate change and overfishing. |
