What Portland's Talking About

A Lack of Treatment Options

The bombing of the Multnomah Athletic Club — which ended in the death of the attacker, Bruce Whitman, highlights a problem with Oregon’s civil commitment laws. Though the Legislature made it slightly easier, it’s still difficult to impel someone to get mental health treatments. Plus, there aren’t enough options for people who need the care. MAC Bomber’s Struggles, a Needle Ban Debate, and a Notable Restaurant Closing

One of Portland’s Best Restaurants Will Close

A year and a half ago, Bon Appétit named Alpenrausch one of the best restaurants in the country. The Alpine-themed restaurant will close after dinner on May 30. Alpenhütte, the beer and sausage spot on the restaurant’s patio, will finish with a party the next day. [Oregonian]

Oregon Settles Voter Registration Lawsuit

The state has settled a lawsuit brought by conservative group Judicial Watch and others. Ultimately, Secretary of State Tobias Read agreed that the state had not been following federal law, which requires removing the registration of voters who were inactive for two federal elections. Read began doing so earlier this year, but also the state wasn’t sending ballots to these inactive voters. [OPB]

Find Your Center In Central Oregon

Hey there, Portlanders! Your next weekend getaway is just a road trip away. Add a bit of high-desert magic to your plans with a trip to Central Oregon.

Where Is It?

Metal sculpture that looks like a model of a molecule but in place of some atoms are a house, a coffee cup, a milk carton, and school.

A representation of the connection between our public spaces and our private lives. (Stephan Vertal / reader submission)

Holladay Park by Lloyd Center is the home of this piece by sculptor Tad Savinar.

“It's named Molecule and part of a series in the park,” writes reader Mark M. The full name is “Constellation: Isolated Molecule for a Good Neighborhood.”

“It marries elements of the community and Portland,” writes Aaron W.

A shoutout to those two readers for identifying the location.

This week’s scavenger hunt comes from reader Mary Pags:

Do you know this mural?

Please click here to submit the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt every Friday. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll reveal the answer and shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly.
