What Portland's Talking About

Why Trees Are Struggling at PDX

Some indoor trees in the newly renovated PDX are showing signs of strain. Apparently travelers have been dumping their coffee in the planters or letting their dogs pee there, which is particularly impacting the black olive trees. It's likely the olive trees will be replaced with a ficus or fern pine — both of those varieties are holding up well. [Oregonian]

  • Related: Rain helps clean dust off trees. Wind helps them grow stronger. But indoor trees, which get neither, can still thrive — with some help. At the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., the black olive trees get a four-hour “shake and wash” every six months. [Oregonian]

A Yo-Yo Champ From Portland

One of the 2026 National Yo-Yo Champions is a 27-year-old trans woman from Portland. Aliyah Tan has been competing since she was 14, but this is her first national title. She won in the 3A division — for two-handed string tricks. She’ll compete at the world championships next month. “As a proud trans woman, Aliyah hopes that this victory will help inspire and give hope to others in the yo-yo community who may be struggling with their identities,” read a press release announcing her win. Moda Center Support Split

The two districts where city councilors are up for reelection this year have the strongest views on funding for the Moda Center, according to recent polling. In District 3, which encompasses most of Southeast Portland, voters are most strongly opposed, with fewer than 40% supporting the proposed $120 million that City Hall is weighing whether to contribute. In District 4, which includes the West Side and a sliver of Southeast, voters are most strongly in favor, with 59% supporting the proposal. [Willamette Week]

Best Ice Cream

Earlier this week, I featured Alex Frane’s picks for Portland’s best ice cream, which mostly weren’t technically ice cream. And I asked for your recommendations for where else to go:

  • “My vote goes to Cloud City in Woodstock. Love the Marionberry Crisp. But many other great flavors as well.” — David C.

“How has no one mentioned Woodstock’s Cloud City?! They have the perfect mix of traditional style flavors and more adventurous flavors (perfect for kids who like to play it safe and their parents who may desire something more sophisticated). I’m particularly obsessed with their sweet & salty combos like the sea salt cookie dough ice cream mixed with their dark chocolate sea salt caramel. Perfection on a spoon. If I can ever pry myself away from Cloud City I look forward to trying some of these other suggestions!” — Christina
  • “One ice cream place (well, gelato) is Bona Gelato on Northwest 10th in The Pearl. Really good spot to get some unique flavor combinations. Can't decide, they will gladly give you a little sample spoon of whatever flavors you are pondering over. So good!” — Scott Pennett
  • “Although not technically in Portland, Luna's Ice Cream [in Milwaukie] is excellent! Should be on the list.” — Kristina Newhouse

Lloyd Center Memories

With the Lloyd Center mall slated to close a month from today, we have been asking for what you remember. Please email us, and we’ll share them in this space.

  • “The Lloyd Center has always held a special place in my heart as my grandfather at the time of building the mall was the president of the carpenters union and also the lead finishing carpenter for all the beautiful woodwork throughout the mall. He and the other carpenters that worked on the mall were so proud of their work as it was a huge project. I am sorry to see a piece of our history going away.” — Corinne

More Portland Events

🩱 Another way to make the most of summer is to spend time at the river — or in it. Willamette Week’s Brianna Wheeler, whom you might recognize as a contributor to our podcast, has picked the best riverside events of summer, including Little Float Milwaukie on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 1 and 2 — as well as the Portland Bridge Swim, this coming Sunday.
