Governor’s Race Unexpectedly Competitive

Democrats enjoy an 11 percentage point advantage over Republicans when it comes to voter registrations in Oregon, but statewide elections are often closer than that. This year, with voters dissatisfied with the direction of the state, there are signs the race for governor could be even more competitive than usual. [OPB / Oregonian]

  • A key indicator: On Friday, the nonpartisan outlet Cook Political Report switched its rankings of the governor’s race from Solid Democrat to Likely Democrat. [OPB]

31 Minutes for Police Response to Park Attack

Half a dozen women were left defending one another at Council Crest one sunny day in April as they waited 31 minutes for police after several of them were attacked by Ayman Elkholy, 31, of Beaverton. Elkholy later pleaded guilty to three counts of harassment and one count of attempted strangulation. “We just started hitting, punching, scratching, pulling his hair, pulling on his clothes — everything,” said a 74-year-old victim. “I didn’t feel in any danger because the sisterhood was there.” [Oregonian]

🐦 Crows are coming to Portland: In this case, I’m talking about six-foot-tall sculptures, which are under construction in preparation for “Wildwood: Follow the Crows,” a public art trail that will beginning on Aug. 7. The 30 crow sculptures are inspired by LAIKA’s upcoming stop-motion film “Wildwood,” based on Colin Meloy’s novel.
