Will Moda Center get an overhaul? (Mark E. McClure)

Moda Center Details Still Missing

Next month, Portland City Council is expected to vote on whether to commit $120 million for Moda Center renovations, but new reporting suggests there won’t be a plan in place for where to find the funding. That’s because the Portland Trail Blazers haven’t shared some key details of their renovation plans, according to reporting from Alex Zielinski at OPB. [OPB]

  • Details: Mayor Keith Wilson has proposed tapping the Portland Clean Energy Fund as well as a fund within Prosper Portland, the city’s economic development agency. But both those boards “must first determine whether their revenue can be spent to overhaul the city-owned arena,” OPB reports. [OPB]
  • Catch-22: But the Blazers are saying they can’t share full details of the renovation plan until they get a commitment from the city. “We have been unable to reach an agreement with the city on a funding mechanism for the formal design phase and, until this happens, finalized architectural renderings quite simply do not yet exist,” Blazers spokesman Charles Boyle. Lawsuit Over Death at Oregon State Hospital

The family of Kenneth Hass is suing over his death after spending three years at the Oregon State Hospital. The federal lawsuit alleges that he was “tortured and deprived of his dignity, his autonomy and his right to care and assistance.” The Oregonian previously reported that Hass spent more than seven months straight in isolation before his death. [Oregonian]

  • New revelations: The lawsuit also says that on one occasion Hass was left in restraints for 59 hours and that staff referred to his case as a “terminal psychotic illness” — which is not a formal medical term but serves as evidence that they had ceased to treat him. [Oregonian]

Iconic Tree Is No More

A tree that offered a bit of nature amid the downtown skyline has died. For 42 years, the 40-foot-tall pine tree graced the 25th floor terrace of PacWest Center. It was removed this month after the owner of the office tower determined it was posing a safety risk and was “in declining health and no longer viable.” It will be replaced by a cherry tree.
