Where To Eat on Your Way to the Coast

If you’re headed out (or headed home), food and drink reporter Alex Frane has some picks for the best spots to stop for a meal. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

• Smokehouse Chicken and Guns (Gales Creek). My favorite stop: Portlanders who loved the shuttered food cart can now stop at their restaurant. The cart was known for rotisserie smoked chicken and fried potatoes called guns (which are a little like jojos); there’s now an expanded menu.
• Camp 18 (on Highway 26). Go for the lodge food like burgers, salad, clam chowder, and onion rings. (Tip from host Claudia Meza: There’s a big cinnamon roll.)
• Mister Goose Sandwich House (St. Helens), which has the same owner as Portland’s Cheese and Crack, has warm sandwiches, served with tater tots. Their signature sandwich is called the loose goose — like a sloppy joe without the tomato sauce.
• Dang’s Little Dragon (St. Helens). In a food cart pod, there’s a Thai sport worth the stop.
• Farmhouse Coffee (Rainer). There’s good drinks. Plus, the park nearby has public restrooms if you’ve already had your caffeine before you left.

Washington County’s Drug Court on Pause

Washington County District Attorney Kevin Barton has stopped sending cases to the drug court, where defendants facing drug-related criminal charges get treatment in place of prison time or other harsher sentences. Barton and presiding Judge Rebecca Guptill pointed fingers at each other in now publicly released letters: Barton asserts that a judge violated an agreement calling for a defendant to serve prison time when he reoffended. Guptill said that the judge had the authority to hand down a lighter sentence. [OPB]

Former Blazers Executive Negotiating Moda Deal for County

After the county approved funding for the Moda Center, Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson’s pick for negotiator raised questions: Former Trail Blazers executive Chris Oxley is a volunteer board president of the nonprofit Sport Oregon, which has lobbied city and county leaders to put public money behind the Moda Center overhaul. “My motivations aren’t to enrich Tom Dundon or create an environment where the public takes a fiscal beating,” Oxley told the Oregonian.
