Oregon's brilliant wildflower season is set to begin later this month. Here are three local wildflowers to seek out on your next adventure in nature:

Also known as the Pacific trillium, this iconic flower has three distinctive white petals framed by three green leaves. As they age, the

The common camas, another member of the lily family, is often spotted among company, creating fields of blue and blue-violet. The bulbs were

This versatile flower, with bluish-white petals, grows on slopes, plateaus, and even vertical cliffs, in sun as well as shade.

Some already threatened cold-water fish species in the Northwest will not only face shrinking habitat from climate change but will face growing pressure from invasive fish species fleeing their own warming and dwindling waters, according to modeling from researchers at Oregon State University.

 published in the journal Global Change Biology by fisheries professor Guillermo Giannico, associate fisheries professor Ivan Arismendi and graduate student Arif Jan. The three found that climate change is likely to compel all kinds of species migration that could lead to increased predation, competition and some localized extinctions of once native species in the Northwest and globally.

Giannico said their models can be run on most species in the world. But for their recent study, the three zeroed in on the northern migration of non-native smallmouth bass and northern pike into threatened and endangered native redband and bull trout habitat in the Northwest. All four of the species are likely to lose habitat as climate change accelerates and are likely to seek homes in colder water at higher elevations.

They created maps using ecological data that indicate the breadth of territory where each species lives and then modeled the impact of changing conditions such as higher temperatures and drought projected through 2070 to see how that would influence the range of all four species’ movement and overlap.

“We forecast how these species would respond to those changing conditions by disappearing from certain regions that will be too warm for them, and appearing in others that maybe today are too cold, but they would be more suitable in the future,” Giannico said. “Because not all shifts are equal, there will be areas where they will be more crowded together, and they would overlap more, and areas where they wouldn’t overlap that much.”

Of great concern is the migration of aggressive and predatory northern pike into redband and bull trout territory, and the increasing likelihood the two will overlap more frequently.

“They all shift, but they end up shifting in a way that the amount of overlap in their distribution is going to be greater,” Giannico explained. “It’s like you have less room to avoid nasty people at the party, and you end up being cornered in the same part of the room with the same people you don’t enjoy, and you’re all packed in the wrong place with the wrong companion.”

Giannico said researchers have long separately studied how climate change will compel the migration of some species and how native species respond to the introduction of invasive species. The modeling done by the Oregon State scientists is an effort to combine the two, and to show how species’ habitats will overlap as climate change compels both native and nonnative species in an area to migrate and cohabitate.

The researchers fear that this increased negative interaction could lead to local extinctions of some native salmonids, similar to those occurring among shrinking populations of bull and rainbow trout from invasive species in southeastern Alaska, Giannico said.

It’s time for Oregon’s spring Whale Watch Week — Saturday, March 22 to Sunday, March 30. In late March, the gray whales begin migrating up the coast on their way back to Alaska.

“Spring is a great time for whale watching because the gray whales are usually closer to shore on their return trip, typically around a mile or so out, and they might have calves in tow,” 

. The population is increasing. Scientists 

 to pass by the Oregon Coast this year, compared with last year, when just 14,500 whales were expected.

There’s some good news for anyone curious about 

foraging for food (and fun) in Portland yards

 and wilderness areas. A lot of our local weeds are edible. “ We brought them here on purpose, as insurance against food starvation, when we decided to colonize America,” says Norther Emily, who runs foraging classes through her company, Wild Solitude.

But proceed with caution. Figuring out what plants are truly safe to eat can be tricky. And some parts of a plant can be edible while others are poisonous.

Here are three plants that are easy to identify and safe to eat:

They’re easily identifiable, in part because of the prickly leaves, but they’re also prized for being quite tasty.

Garden roses don’t generally taste great. Instead, look for smaller roses and sample the petals. There are some small wild roses that are particularly tasty.

Absolutely everyone can find some dandelion. But know that it’s advisable to harvest the greens when they’re small and tender.

If you’re looking for a way to stay active in the winter, consider cross-country skiing at one of the many great spots around Portland. It’s low impact, relatively accessible, and a great way to explore the wilderness. Rebecca Jacobson recently published

Cross-country skiing is much more affordable than other winter sports, and a bit less intense, which makes it a great option for folks of all skill levels, whether you want to go hard or take a leisurely approach.

Be sure to bring sunscreen anytime you’re outdoors, regardless of the time of year. And remember that cross-country skiing is an aerobic activity, so wearing layers of clothes that are easy to remove is key. Packing light is also important — the more you carry, the harder it will be to balance on the skis, so bring a small backpack or fanny pack where you can carry sunglasses and some snacks.

You’ll of course need cross-country skis, which are longer and narrower than downhill skis, along with poles and boots. The ski bindings and boots need to match, so make sure you grab the right ones. And blisters are no fun, so pack moleskin tape to apply on areas that are prone to irritation.

There are shops around Portland that will rent out cross-country skiing equipment at a fairly affordable price — a good idea for first-timers and those who are not fully committed to the sport. There’s 

 (in Portland), which hosts the largest fleet of rental equipment.

Plus, rental shops are a good resource for gear recommendations and ski tips.

A top destination just about 90 minutes away from the city. There are 24 kilometers of well-groomed trails with something for everyone. They also provide classes and there’s a heated day-use cabin that comes in clutch when you’re ready for a break.

There are many cross-country spots across the Columbia River, and one of our favorites is the ski loop at Atkisson, which leads up to the 

 — you’ll need to park your skis to enter the caves.

Named after cross-country ski pioneer Virginia Meissner, this nonprofit operated sno-park is located near Bend, Oregon, and features 47 kilometers of trails groomed daily and gorgeous views of Broken Top and South Sister mountains.

One of the “perks” of Portland’s abysmal snow cleanup is the opportunity to ski on city streets. The informal cross-country ski race has been a snow day tradition since 2008 and you might even run into Dylan T. Pickle — the mascot for the Portland Pickles and a very talented skier.
