Sure, you could just order one online or grab a ready-to-go version, but there’s nothing like chopping down your own Christmas tree and hauling it back to your abode. Plus, Oregon holds the distinction of being the top grower and exporter of Christmas trees in the country. Here is a guide to where and how to get your own Christmas tree around Portland.
Where to Get a Christmas Tree in Portland
Clackamas County is a good place to start — it’s just southeast of Portland, the home of the Oregon Christmas Tree Growers Association, and consistently produces the most trees in the country. Places like Redland Family Farms have a great selection and will provide cutting materials. Our friends at PDX Monthly also have a handy list of u-cut farms.
The U.S. Forest Service also offers special permits that will allow you to explore the Willamette National Forest and cut down a tree. Permits are $5 and can be purchased online or through a number of vendors. If you have a fourth-grade student, permits are free through the Every Kid Outdoors Pass.
The Bureau of Land Management is now offering Christmas tree-cutting permits at $5 for trees up to 12-feet tall.
Know Before You Go
Not all firs are created equal, so take a moment to check what type of Christmas tree is right for you.
And if you’re cutting your own tree, it’s important to come prepared. Check what tools are provided before you stop by a tree farm and make sure your vehicle is ready for transport. If your permit is through the forest service, bookmark the know-before-you-go FAQ page.
